ExCAL and Ofalis Limited are responsible for the Land Management of a large area on the North Wales coast.

The ecological mitigation package was agreed during the Planning Application process for the development of a gas refinery.

Our team now manages approx 500 acres of the surrounding land with a remit of enhancing its conservation value.

This is achieved via a comprehensive Land Management Programme. Each of the distinct habitats within the area is covered by a tailor made management plan, all of which were developed by ExCAL during an extensive consultation process with key stakeholders such as NRW and RSPB.

In brief the areas include: -

Warren Farm SSSI.

Warren Farm is a 90 acre arable farm where practices have been modified to create an excellent winter wetland habitat for wading birds and wildfowl that visit the nearby Dee Estuary.

The farm has been equipped with 2 large fresh water lakes that are used to collect and store surface water from the area until specific times of year when water is pumped to selected managed zones in order to artificially flood certain fields, thus creating excellent conditions for wading birds to feed & roost.  The success of this habitat creation is monitored.

Gronant Dunes & Talacre Warren SSSI.

This parcel is 160 acres of open public access land. Management at these locations is focused upon habitat improvement, flood defence issues and the management of visitor pressure, as it is a key tourist attraction for the county.

Llawndy Farm SSSI.

Llawndy Farm is a 25 acre farm which features a large fresh water lagoon that has undergone extensive landscaping and planting in order to screen the gas terminal from the local community of Talacre.  Restrictions are placed on the numbers of stock grazing and times of year for grazing and hay cutting so that the area remains fairly undisturbed, providing a wildlife haven for waders & wildfowl both during winter & summer.

Saltmarsh SSSI.

This 38 acre site is inaccessible to all but the birds that flock here in their 1000’s during winter months. The land has been leased to the RSPB to manage and is now run as a bird sanctuary with bird hide and events.

ExCAL have developed a Field Study Centre at the Point of Ayr Terminal. A refurbished barn is the venue for a classroom that is designed around its local environment, both inside & out.

Local schools are invited to join the ExCAL Land Management and education team to learn about their local environment and how to look after it.

The gardens, farms, & dunes are used and visited as examples of different habitats with different needs. The educational materials are designed to be in line with the current school curriculum and teachers are invited on teacher-training days in order to make the most of the resources available.

The land management programme received a ‘High Commendation’ at the BHPB annual HSEC awards in Australia 2 yrs ago in the Environment category, recognising 10 years of sustained positive management.
